A Little About Me

me

My very first decorated cake was a true work of love - my older daughter's first birthday. In our family, it is a tradition that every first birthday is celebrated with a 3D Sitting Teddybear cake. My sister, the original family cake decorator, had moved out of province - so I bought a beginner kit, rented the pan, and away I went. Kids, work, dogs and other interests prevented me from pursuing sugar arts as a hobby or even part time career at that time, but I continued to create special cakes for family birthdays.

My first wedding cake was for my niece. She was married in Ontario, so my house became the bakery and decorating shop. The decorating bug, which already had its hooks poised, definitely 'took hold' at that point.

Later a co-worker, also interested in the sugar arts, and I kept each other company taking our initial sugarpaste courses - which I thoroughly enjoyed and to which I have become entirely addicted! I have followed these with further courses in making sugar flowers and the various techniques of Australian decorating as well as cake carving, painting and modelling techniques. I've attended workshops in special techniques: brush embroidery, quilling, Oriental (upside down) stringwork, airbrushing and more flowers.

I'm a current member of Canadian Cake Decorators Guild, former member of the Canadian Society of Sugar Artistry, and competed in the 2009 contest held at the Markville Shopping Center. You may have seen me, as an assistant, on the 2012 Slice TV presentation of CakeWalk - Wedding Cake Edition.

I love creating something and hearing "That can't be cake!" The next best thing is when that creation is devoured with gusto.
